Family Treasures

Hey everyone!  It's a brand new week and Spring is definitely in the air in lots of places -- here for sure!  I've been so excited to share this post with all of you, about our newly acquired family treasures.  The Man's sister and bil were kind enough to deliver these items to us all the way from the Great Northwest.  These are things that had belonged to The Man's mom and dad and were very much treasures, especially to my sweet mil.  No one else in the family had a place for them except us.  So, yay, we feel so blessed to be the guardians of these lovelies.

This china is Homer Laughlin Empire Green and was made around 1955 and discontinued in 1957.  My mil collected it as a grocery store promotion.  She earned points with her grocery purchases each week at her little local Ed's Market to use toward collecting these pieces, one item at a time.  There is a complete (not a single chip) 5-pc. place-setting, service for eight, with the addition of a serving bowl, creamer & sugar, gravy boat w/plate, & a large platter.  Can you just imagine how long it must have taken her to collect this set?  That makes it even more special.  She never had a nice way to display this set, so they remained safely tucked away and used only for Thanksgiving, Christmas and maybe Easter, according to The Man.

This is a beautiful set of Roger's Victoria Rose with a few extra pieces that look like they probably belonged to my mil's mother.  Most of it is silverplate, but I've never even had that, so I'm thrilled!

This Grandmother clock is so gorgeous and brings us such fond memories, as it always had a prominent spot in the family home.  It was a birthday present from The Man's father to his mother in 1983.  There is a special plate inside the door with their name and the date -- is that just so sweet?
The chimes of this clock are so beautiful!

Now, let me share with you how I am displaying everything.  You have all seen my dining room furniture many times, but I think this is the best dressed my china cabinet has ever been!

I've blended a few vintage pieces from my family's history with this lovely china.

I love that the dark pine finish is the perfect backdrop for all of these pieces.

This is a sweet little teapot that had also belonged to my mil that I already had, and several years ago I found the little cream and sugar at an antique shop -- not an exact match, but close.  I simply stacked some of the extra plates, added a hand-embroidered doily, and topped it with a cloche.

Here I added in some vintage crystal pieces & another old teapot.

I just love the shape of these teacups.  These two teapots had also been my mil's.

I kept my sweet little Easter bunny display.   Don't they look happy here!

The Man says he remembers that it was very special to his mom to get the creamer and sugar bowl set.

I added a little nest to a stack of soup bowls for a bit more Spring and Easter.

I forgot to take a before of this box, but it was kind of banged up and scratched.  Thank goodness for Pledge Renewal Oil -- looks beautiful!

I like the way it looks over here on the white buffet.

These tarnish-retarding boxes really work -- almost every piece was in beautiful shiny condition.

This is the view from our front door -- love this!  Just makes me smile!

Just a quick little look-see of my simple dining table arrangement.  I made the dropcloth tablecloth a couple of months ago & simply fringed a strip of burlap for a runner.  Little tiny book page scrolls surround the battery-operated candles in the glass hurricanes that I found last year at Ross.

It looks like this space between these two big windows was just waiting to be the perfect home for this clock.  Of course, this will mean a different location for our Christmas Tree this year, but I have a few months to figure that out....lol!

Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing in my excitement over these wonderful items.  I can't wait to do a nice table setting with this china, and I will definitely share when I do that.  Again, thank you, and I hope you have a wonderful week!

  6. Oh my, those are beautiful dishes! I especially love the teacups. Your display of them is so pretty - love how you added the birds nest. Thank you for visiting and your comment on my Fiestaware tablescape! I also love other Homer Laughlin dishes, although the only item I own is a little white creamer I found on ebay. It's so fun collecting them, isn't it?

  11. I love the fact that the china was collected over time at a little grocery store! My mom has tons of things that she collected that way! I think it makes it so special that she collected it over time too. I got our mantle clock as part of a grocery store collection. :) Love how you displayed everything. It all looks so nice.

  16. What a treasure to have these beautiful things your MIL loved and took such good care of. I can't believe those dishes survived intact without a single chip! I'm sharing your post with my Mom. I pretty sure these are the dishes she had when first married but only a few pieces have survived through the years. Your's are beautifully displayed as well!
