Hand-Painted China

Hey everyone!  Y'all may remember back in March when The Man's sister and bil hand-delivered all the wonderful family treasures to us.  You can see the Grandmother clock, silver, & china HERE.  What I didn't share at the time was some hand-painted china plates that The Man's aunt painted, but no one wanted -- sniff, sniff, how sad!  Anyway we got them, and I knew immediately what I wanted to do with some of them.

Display them here in our guest room!

Right there between the two lamps.  This is how I proceeded.

I taped newspaper together to fit the space and started playing around with the plates.  Once I decided on the layout, I outlined the plates on the paper, marked the center, & then labeled the
plates and the paper.

I read about these plate discs on the internet and thought they sounded like the perfect answer.  The instructions tell you to wash the plates with soap and water and thoroughly dry -- well, that would remove my labels.  Soooo.......I took a picture with my cell phone of the layout -- ahhh, the many uses of our beloved cell phones!

The rest of the instructions for these discs were pretty straight-forward -- wet the backs, allow them to get tacky and adhere them to the plates.  Then you let them set up and dry for 24 hours.  Okay!

By the next morning, almost every disc was loose and raised in some area or another.  Aaaack -- now what?  I could have returned them, but some were stuck and some were not;  so I simply added Aileen's Tacky Glue to the backs, and those suckers are not going anywhere -- problem solved!

Now it was time to get the wall ready.

I taped my newspaper to the wall, using a tape measure and level.  I had already determined where the nails would need to go and marked those spots on the newspaper.

I tapped in the nails, removed the paper, and.....

Hung the plates.  I'm seriously loving this display!

I've tried to keep the decor in this room fresh, but with a very nostalgic feel with special mementos.
These plates certainly fit the theme.  The Man's aunt started painting china when she was 75 years old!
She even won some awards for her work.

I feel so honored and blessed to be the custodian of these lovelies.

This is the one she received an award for -- understandable, right?

Oh my, the detail is incredible!

You can tell these are early efforts, but they are so sweet.

I just love them!

One last look.

We are fortunate to have several more of these wonderful plates, and I have a plan and place for them, too!  I'll share just as soon as I get that project finished.

Thanks so much for stopping by, and please know you are always welcome.

  2. Aren't you smart to use the newspaper like that! Good tip! I've used that Aileen's tacky glue many times too. It's good stuff. My hubby is partial to JB Weld...says it can fix anything. LOL! I really like the plates. Those little birdies are precious, and she did a really good job on them. Don't you love decorating with things that really have meaning and a story behind them? It makes it so much more special.

  5. Hi Carol! Oh, the plates are so precious and they look wonderful on your wall and look perfect in the bedroom. I've seen those kinds of hangers before but have never used them. What a shame to know you waited 24 hours and they hadn't stuck the right way! Good old glue came to the rescue! :)
    Be a sweetie,
