Midnight at the Oasis & a Bit of Nostalgia

Midnight at the Oasis is Yuma's big annual  Historic Car Show event & attracts thousands of people from all across the country.  It has totally taken over the town since Thursday (registering, getting your parking slot, plus live entertainment) & will continue thru Sunday.   When you add all these extra people to our 100,000+ winter visitors who were already here, we are talking about some serious "bulging at the seams" going on.  Don't even bother trying to get in a restaurant -- not gonna happen!

Friday was the Parade of Cars" that follows a route that is not far from our home.  We were planning to drive The Man's toy out to watch the parade, but it got super windy and we decided not to go.  The Man's "Stang" isn't old enough to participate in the festivities yet!

People start lining the street about 2 o'clock for a parade that begins about 5.  Yes, I'm completely serious.  They bring food, beverages, chairs, you name it, they've got it.  I actually took these pics last year which was also windy, but not to the extent it was this year.  But according to the news, The Man & I were pretty much the only ones who were deterred by the wind.  The cars you see on the street were people just trying to get HOME!

They were quickly replaced by the likes of these.....
One of my personal favs -- love a pretty T-Bird!

This is a local family who always participate in the parade.

Again, these are photos from last year.  This was just inside the entrance to the display fields (encompasses several acres) shortly after opening on Saturday.  Temps were in the 90's, but should only be in the 80's this year.

Another lovely T-Bird in my fav color combo!

We almost bought one of these just before we got married.
Mustang Mach 1

Instead, we bought this.
Dodge Dart Swinger 340

When The Man was really just The Boy, he bought a pitiful pile of rusted metal & turned it into this.

When we thought we had some money, & before our kiddoes could drive, we bought this.
1964 Corvette Stingray

Except for The Man's '89 Mustang, we are hopelessly practical (maybe a bit boring) about vehicles these days.  We have an old (very) Toyota pickup that thinks it's the energizer bunny & just keeps on keepin' on; & we have an '05 Toyota Camry XL that is probably the best car we've ever owned.  Cars are an interesting part of our lives as we move through all the different stages -- newlyweds, young parents, carpools, teenage drivers, reclaiming our youth, being practical, & most importantly now -- COMFORT!  I bet we've owned 25+ cars during our marriage  & they are each a part of our family's history.  Thanks for taking a little stroll with me down Memory Lane.  I hope you'll come again soon.

  1. Wow, love those old cars! I've own three VW beetles in my youth... one was even red with a convertible top! I love the brown background, it really makes your blog header pop... especially the yellow/gold. LOVE!

  2. That was a fun trip down memory lane. Our first 'new' car when were married was a bright yellow Mustang Boss 302. I loved driving that car. But, sadly, we sold it in favor of a newer model. Isn't that usually the way?

  3. Enjoyed your car show. I haven't owned that many cars, when I get comfortablw with one, I ride it until it is decrepit. I have a Saturn Aura now-I am still not completely in love with it.

  4. Cas, I love, love, love the old cars. I really enjoy going to car shows, too...so this would have been so much fun. I drive my cars until the wheels fall off. I once drove a car for 16 years...it was a 1982 Mercedes 300D (diesel). We gave it to our son to drive when he was 17. He drove it for 2 until he slid on ice and crunched up the hood. We decided to not get it fixed. It had 325,000 miles on it when that happened. I was planning on getting one of those antique tags for it when it turned 20. Oh, well. It kept my teenage son safe...so that was what really mattered. :) Sorry the wind kept you away. I love your convertible...convertibles are sooo much FUN! :)
